This course is offered to update the
educational needs of allied health professionals who participate in the
care of individuals with diabetes. Topics are designed to address the
challenges patients face in living with diabetes in today’s world and how
health professionals can make a difference. It will provide the
participant with a comprehensive learning experience through lectures,
breakout sessions and question and answer sessions.

Target Audience
Nurses, nurse practitioners, dieticians,
physical therapists, pharmacists, and physician assistants and other
health professionals who particate in the care of individuals with
diabetes
Objectives
At the
conclusion of the activity, participants should be able to:

Discuss
utilization of combined treatment modalities in Type 2 Diabetes

Explain the
correlation between diabetes and vascular disease

Describe the
technological advances in the areas of diabetes management

Describe the
physiologic benefits of exercise on glucose utilization and weight
maintenance

Discuss both
medical and behavioral strategies to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus in
children and adolescents
-
Discuss the
use of the team approach to facilitate diabetes education
-
Discuss
adolescent and young adult issues and behaviors which interfere with
optimal diabetes care
-
Apply the
results of the diabetes prevention protocol into primary care goals
Accreditation
CME—The University of Texas Medical
Branch at Galveston is accredited by the Accreditation Council of
Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical
education for physicians.
The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston designates this
educational activity for a maximum of 12.5 category 1 credits toward the
AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. Each physician should only claim only
those credits that he/she actually spent in the activity.
CNE—UTMB Continuing Nursing Education is an approved provider of
continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an
accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s
Commission on Accreditation.
This activity meets Type I criteria for mandatory continuing education
requirements toward relicensure as established by the Board of Nurse
Examiners for the State of Texas. This activity provides up to 15 contact
hours.
