Dr. Barbara J. Anderson, Ph.D.,
Senior Psychologist at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston and named
Diabetes Educator of the Year for 2003. One of her research areas has been
working with families of young patients with diabetes. She will discuss
adolescent and young adult issues which interfere with optimal diabetes
care.
Dr. Ligia Belalcazar, Assistant
Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism at UTMB, Galveston. Dr
Belalcazar is principal investigator of a study related to genetic
deficiencies in biliary cholesterol and non-cholesterol sterol metabolism.
She will lecture on the relationship between diabetes and vascular
disease.
Dr. Fannie E. Smith, M.D., Ph.D.,
Medical Director of adult diabetes at The Stark Diabetes Center at UTMB
in Galveston, TX. She is assistant professor in the division of
endocrinology and a widely published diabetes researcher. She will lecture
on pharmacologic and lifestyle interventions important in the treatment of
diabetes and in the control of risk factors for complications.
Dr. Pamela Watson, Dean of UTMB's
School of Nursing has also worked as a principal investigator on a NIH
funded clinical trial related to the prevention of Type 2 diabetes. She
will be lecturing on how the results of the diabetes prevention trial
translates into primary care goals.
Catherine A. Mullooly, M.S., R.C.E.P.,
C.D.E., Director of Exercise Physiology at the Joslin Clinic in
Boston, MA. She is widely published in the scientific literature and will
lecture on the role of exercise in diabetes control and weigh maintenance.
Karmeen Kulkarni, M.S., R.D., BC-ADM,
C.D.E., is a widely published dietician, lecturer, and diabetes
educator. She has had a great deal of input into the new nutrition
guidelines for diabetes at the national level and will be lecturing on the
process of evaluation and implementation of Medical Nutrition Therapy for
diabetes.
Barbara Schreiner, RN, MN, BC-ADM, CDE,
Associate Director of the Texas Children's Hospital Diabetes/Endocrine
Care Center, is a widely published diabetes researcher and lecturer as
well as associate professor at the Baylor College of Medicine. She is a
consultant to several pharmaceutical companies and diabetes education
programs.
