		Donors - The Miriam and Emmett McCoy Foundation The Miriam and Emmett McCoy Foundation is funding 2 programs described below for three years, at the rate of $50,000 a year for each. Promising Research Toward Replacing Islet Cells in Type 1 Diabetics Educational Programs for Diabetes Health Professionals The American Diabetes Association recommends that every person with diabetes receive self-management training. This requires a health care provider familiar with the latest information in both diabetes education and effective methods for adult learning. UTMB's diabetes education program is now accessible primarily to patients who can attend classes in Galveston. We could benefit many more Texans if we could train health professionals  (nurses, social workers, physician assistants, pharmacists and others) who could return to their communities and translate these goals for education into their work with local patients. Such training is not easily accessible for health care providers who live in rural areas and in small cities without major medical centers. To meet this need, UTMB's Stark Diabetes Center seeks to develop an Educational Program for Diabetes Education Professionals. we propose To develop and implement an annual two-day training and update seminar to be held in Galveston and to carry continuing education credit To develop an online continuing education program for health professionals which can be accessed at any time via the Internet or the Stark Center website To modify and implement these curricula for use with telehealth and other distance education modalities To continue onsite training for diabetes education providers throughout the year at the Stark Diabetes Center, building on UTMB's patient education program, which has been certified by the American Diabetes Association since 1993. Support at the level of $50,000 a year will enable the Stark Diabetes Center to develop these materials and will defray the cost of development of innovative telehealth methodologies for delivering education to health care providers throughout Texas at little or no cost to them. Many health professionals have access to interactive teleconferencing facilities through their hospitals or local community colleges. Others can access the same materials, but without visual interaction, via computers. Utilizing these resources, the program the McCoy Foundation would help fund would allow health professionals to become more effective patient educators and access the Stark Center's continually-updated knowledge base while continuing their jobs caring for patients in their home communities. Through these two programs, the combined resources of UTMB's Stark Diabetes Center and the Miriam and Emmett McCoy Foundation can help diminish the toll diabetes takes on the health of Texas.
