History of the Stark Diabetes Center
Each year, more than 50,000 visits to UTMB involve a patient with diabetes. The Center recognizes both the opportunity and the responsibility we have to serve these patients. To this end, the Center will have several components including:
The Nelda C. and H.J. Stark Diabetes Center was opened on June 18, 2001 after receiving a generous grant from the Stark Foundation of Orange, Texas. Dr. Randall J. Urban is Director of the center and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology at UTMB. Fannie E. Smith, Ph.D., M.D., F.A.C.E., is a fulltime Diabetologist caring for diabetic patients in the Center. To date over 900 patients have been seen at the Stark Diabetes Center. Of these patients, over two-thirds are diagnosed with diabetes. One-third of the patients have other endocrine related diagnoses. We have five endocrinologists in our division with specialties in diabetes, thyroid, pituitary gland, male hormonal disorders, lipidology and osteoporosis. The Endocrine Division also has a fellowship program for physicians specializing in endocrinological diseases and has two fellows in training at all times. In addition to medical care for individuals with diabetes, we also offer a diabetes self-management program. This was the first program in a teaching hospital to be recognized by the American Diabetes Association as meeting national standards for diabetes patient education. Our program has been recognized since 1993 and trains approximately 1,000 patients per year.
