		Dr Kirk Smith appointed Associate Director for Community Outreach for the Stark Diabetes Center Kirk Smith M.D. PhD. has been appointment as Associate Director for Community Outreach for the Stark Diabetes Center.  Dr Smith will be responsible for mobilizing coalitions of local stake holders to establish community-based diabetes prevention and control programs in underserved communities throughout southeast and south Texas. Dr. Smith is an MD/PhD graduate of UTMB who completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.  In 1998, while still a student at UTMB, he helped to found Frontera de Salud, a volunteer organization of health care students and professionals committed to bringing access to care to underserved communities.  In his tenure as director of the program, Frontera has been instrumental in establishing community-based health education and promotion programs in underserved communities.  Dr. Smith continues to serve as Executive Director of Frontera de Salud which now includes chapters at four Texas academic healthcare centers.
